"An increasing number of colleges and universities are requiring students to have their own personal computers, particularly laptop computers. There are many benefits to this approach (standardization may mean less costly support, site licenses can provide savings, costs can be included in student financial aid, fewer student labs may be needed, access to computing will be more democratic, ubiquitous computing access facilitates use of technology in teaching and learning), but many issues arise, as well (increase in support needed for student computing, pressure for faculty to use technology in their teaching, impact on network infrastructure, expense to students, and issues related to ownership, standardization, software upgrades, and security)."
