The Basic Medical Pathology series began in the early 1980s as a collaborative videomicroscopy project between the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications at the National Library of Medicine and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Based on a series of videotapes produced by Dr. Robin R. Jones of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Dr. James Woods of the National Library of Medicine originated the conversion of the videotapes to computer-controlled videodisc and served as Project Officer for the series which came to include content from esteemed faculty at other medical schools. Eventually 11 videodiscs containing instructional videos, images, and quiz modules were created and distributed to over 80 medical schools in the United States and overseas and are still in use today. The series' two neoplasia video modules were converted to html/streaming video formats by Dr. Woods and are available here.
The Pathology Education Instructional Resource (PEIR) of the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Department of Pathology has converted the NLM's Basic Medical Pathology videodiscs into digital format. This site contains the series' videos, images, and quizzes in a WWW-deliverable format as well as external links to additional online resources.
